FILM-FRIENDLY ZONES
Diverse Locations.
One Film-Friendly Nation.
Occidente
The Western region, located in Costa Rica’s central highlands, is a scenic gem largely unexplored by the audiovisual industry yet ideal for productions seeking dramatic nature, privacy, and unique landscapes. Among its most notable destinations is Bajos del Toro Amarillo, a community nestled between the Poás and Viejo volcanoes, home to Catarata del Toro: a majestic 90-meter waterfall plunging into an ancient volcanic crater, surrounded by cloud forest and impressive rock formations.
This environment—with lush tropical biodiversity, rare species, and panoramic views—is perfect for filming atmospheres of mystery, fantasy, spirituality, or adventure. It is easily accessible from San José and Juan Santamaría International Airport without needing special vehicles, and it features privately owned infrastructure committed to environmental conservation and ready to support film crews. The Western zone is also an excellent alternative to recreate international fictional settings in temperate or Mesoamerican forests, offering soft natural light and constant mist that add visual texture and cinematic atmosphere
The Costa Rica Film Commission is continuously working to enhance the accessibility and infrastructure of these Film-Friendly Zones, ensuring that international and local productions can seamlessly integrate into the diverse landscapes Costa Rica has to offer. Whether capturing nature, culture, or adventure, each zone provides an extraordinary setting for bringing stories to life.
