Central

The Central Film Friendly Zone, encompassing the entire Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) of Costa Rica—including San José, Heredia, Alajuela, and Cartago—is the country’s most dynamic and versatile region for audiovisual productions. This area combines rich history, diverse architecture, and modern infrastructure, all easily accessible from Juan Santamaría International Airport and well connected by an efficient road network. From the iconic National Theater and the cultural center CENAC in San José, to the historic neighborhoods of Amón, Escalante, and Otoya, as well as modern districts like Rohrmoser and Curridabat, the zone offers urban, suburban, and semi-rural settings ideal for a wide variety of genres and storytelling styles.

Additionally, the zone includes cities with distinct identities such as Heredia, Alajuela, and Cartago, which provide colonial, university, and mountainous landscapes that enrich narratives. The presence of important cultural institutions like the Gold Museum, the National Museum, and the Costa Rican Art Museum, along with historic railway stations and green spaces such as La Sabana Metropolitan Park, further expand visual and thematic possibilities. The Central Film Friendly Zone stands out for its accessibility, aesthetic diversity, and cultural depth, becoming an ideal canvas for productions seeking to blend modernity, history, and urban life all in one location.

The Costa Rica Film Commission is continuously working to enhance the accessibility and infrastructure of these Film-Friendly Zones, ensuring that international and local productions can seamlessly integrate into the diverse landscapes Costa Rica has to offer. Whether capturing nature, culture, or adventure, each zone provides an extraordinary setting for bringing stories to life.
