The Gothic-style building began construction in 1902, with its basic stone structure completed in 1905. It is unique in that it faces east rather than west, contrary to Catholic tradition, due to the location of the community at that time. It was designated a cathedral on April 27, 1998, and in 2002 it was declared Architectural Heritage of Puntarenas Province.

San Lucas Island is a continental island located in the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica. In addition to housing the facilities of the country’s most famous former prison, the island has nine beaches, four of which are recommended for tourism and recreation. Its flora and fauna are similar to those of the dry region of Guanacaste Province, and wildlife such as bats, howler monkeys, squirrels, and iguanas can be observed.

The Casa de la Cultura of Puntarenas, “Elsie Canessa de Odio,” was created as an entity attached to the Ministry of Culture and Youth. This building is classified as Historical and Architectural Heritage of Costa Rica. In 1913, ownership of the property was transferred to the Ministry of Security to build the Plaza Command and City Jail.

Parque Marino Del Pacífico

The Pacific Marine Park is an inter-institutional organization led by the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Telecommunications (MINAET). It features green areas for family enjoyment, water play areas (fountain-style jets), and a swimming pool for both adults and children. There is also a small soda (snack bar) on-site. The park occupies the land where the Pacific Railroad yards and station once stood. Outdoor exhibits include reptiles, caimans, tortoises, and crocodiles. There are twenty-two aquariums housing around 30 native species from the Gulf of Nicoya.

Located across from the city of Puntarenas, the Puntarenas Estuary covers 52.4 km² and contains one of the most important mangrove wetland systems in Costa Rica’s Central Pacific. The estuary and mangroves can be explored by boat, kayak, or paddleboard, thanks to the calm waters. Birdwatching is popular, with more than 50 species roosting there, including the endangered roseate spoonbill. Various species of fish, crustaceans, annelids, and mollusks inhabit the intertidal waters and mudflats.
